Reuben Leng is a Melbourne-based Collaborative Artist and Performer.
Reuben grew up on the Mornington Peninsula, moving to Melbourne to commence classical piano studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Initially set on becoming a mathematician—completing multiple physics units in the University of Melbourne Extension program—a last-minute decision was made to dedicate his academic life to music instead. Studying under internationally renowned pianist Kristian Chong throughout his undergraduate studies, Reuben’s honours year saw a shift from practical performance towards research on the cultural and philosophical aspects of western performance practices. After completion of a coursework masters in performance teaching at the University of Melbourne, Reuben wishes to continue to grow musically and contribute to making music more accessible and inclusive through creative projects, performance, and pedagogy.
With a philosophically informed practice that considers the meanings of Western culture in our modern world, Reuben is active in a variety of performance and pedagogical roles, working with visual and cross-over art, organising musical resources and recordings, live events and performances (classical and contemporary), and accompaniment and teaching in schools.
